Theme: How Our School Is Helping Newton "Go Green"

Submission deadline Monday, March 15.

The global warming crisis is upon us. Our community must continue to conserve and respect our environmental resources in all aspects of our lives.

This year's art contest expands the scope beyond the energy conservation focus of previous contests to the environment in general and how students are helping their schools and Newton "go green."

Students may register on-line to participate in this year's contest.

We also plan to have this year's contest entries displayed at Newton City Hall in the rotunda, as in 2008 and 2009.

  • Eligibility: All students in grades K-5 who live or go to school in Newton
    • Entries will be judged with others from the same grade only
    • Register on-line at www.greendecade.org to enter this year’s contest
  • Grades K, 1 and 2: teams of students may submit posters
    • Teams of 4-6 students enter posters
    • Classrooms may have as many teams as the teacher elects to have
  • Grades 3, 4 and 5: Two options
    • Teams of 4-6 students enter posters; as many teams per classroom as teacher elects
    • Individuals: may also enter posters

JUDGING: All entries will be judged using a blind judging process — judges will not know the name of the entrant, and all entries will be judged within their grade level (K, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5). Instructions are listed on the contest entry form.

PRIZES: New this year -- teams can will for your school! All participants will receive a certificate of participation.

Team prizes: for each grade
6 first place, 18 Honorable Mention)

  • 1st place: Basket of eco-friendly/non-toxic art supplies ($50 value) for teacher
  • Three Honorable Mentions: certificate & recognition at awards

Individual winners: Grades 3, 4 and 5
(3 first place, 3 second place, 18 Honorable Mention)

  • 1st place: $35 check
  • 2nd place: $25 check
  • Three Honorable Mentions: certificate & recognition at awards

Art Basket Raffle!

  • All contestants will be automatically entered into a raffle to win a $50 eco-art supply basket, with the winning name to be drawn at the Awards Ceremony. (Note: Prize winners’ names will not be entered into the raffle.)
