Newton Student Energy Conservation Contests 2009

The global warming crisis is upon us. Our community must begin to conserve, to reduce our energy use, and we must do it now

The Green Decade Coalition/Newton with funding from NSTAR, Chapman Construction/Design, SUEZ Energy Resources, Boston Green Building and other organizations, is offering two contests on this topic this year:

  • Energy Conservation Essay Contest
  • Energy Conservation Art Contest

The contests are open to all students in grades 3-12 who either live or go to school in Newton:

  • Elementary (3-5)
  • Middle School (6-8)
  • High School (9-12)

Students may choose to enter either or both contests.

CONTEST GUIDELINES
ESSAY Contest ART Contest
  • Essays will address three questions on the students' current and future energy conservation actions
  • Essay length: by school level:
    • Elementary: 500 words
    • Middle school: 1000 words
    • High school: 1500 words
  • Essays may be submitted on paper or e-mailed to energyEssay@greendecade.org
  • All entries must be submitted by March 20!
  • Awards: April 29, 2009 (close to Earth Day!)
  • More information
  • Creative and artistic expression of current and future energy conservation actions
  • Maximum size: 12"x 18"
  • 2 Dimensional
  • May use photographs/collage and text
  • All media welcomed, use of recycled materials encouraged
  • Artwork may be mailed or submitted at designated locations
  • All entries must be submitted by March 20!
  • Awards: April 29, 2009 (close to Earth Day!)

JUDGING: All entries will be judged using a blind judging process — judges will not know the name of the entrant, and all entries will be judged within their designated level (elementary, middle school, high school). Instructions are listed on the contest entry form.

PRIZES: Will be awarded for First, Second and Third places at each level. All participants will receive a certificate of participation. See the 2009 Winners!
